My starter had long been weak (cranking slow) so I assumed this was the starter (new battery), so I replaced it along with a new negative cable for the bigger v6 battery. The new one cranks excellent.

Unless you have had work done around the starter there is no reason for the connections to be loose. The starter gets it's ground through the engine block. The block is grounded to the body with 2 ground cables. The starter has 2 connections, one directly to the battery and the other is the starter solenoid.
