On the 400ex the oil goes to the topend through internal engine gallys. So you cant check like jdp said. You can however remove the left rear valve adjustment cover and see if oil is squirting inside while cranking over. The oil filter can very easily be put in backwards.Okay so one: the inside of my valve cover looks very rough. I'll upload pics of it.. Start by removing the three 10mm bolts that hold the plastic cover onto the top of the engine. Remove the plastic cover and set it aside along with the three bolts/washers. This is what it will look like underneath the plastic cover. I have replaced 2 of the rocker arms and 2 of the sub-rocker arms. I checked the cam chain when i did this and it was tight.
